The pace of change is expected to continue to accelerate. Throughout the pandemic, the Federal Aviation Administration has been working proactively to ease restrictions in order to preserve air commerce. Among these initiatives, the FAA has enabled drone use for COVID-19 response efforts within its existing regulations and emergency procedures. Beyond the current rules, the FAA also provides a process to obtain the necessary waivers to operate aircraft beyond the visual line of sight of the pilot, over people and in congested areas. These waivers can be leveraged to provide additional opportunities and value for unmanned aircraft operations. Finally, the FAA will be completing work on two important rulemakings later this year regarding flight over people, night operations and the remote identification of aircraft. These new rules will further standardize procedures, providing new flexibility and opportunities. Understanding both the law and the technology is key to making informed decisions about how unmanned aircraft can be used effectively by the medical industry.
